« He has exceeded 900 interpretations in the most famous theatres in Europe »

The driving force in Rolando Saad’s artistic and personal life is an enduring fascination for the guitar. After a performing career that spans three decades, his numerous international tours are still fuelled by a passion for communicating the rhythmic richness and beautiful sound of the Spanish guitar.

An afinity for the classical Spanish repertoire was the major influence on Rolando Saad’s early career. Following his professional debut in Palma de Mallorca at the age of 19, he played solo recitals in over 40 countries and concentrated exclusively on works by Albéniz, Granados, Sor and Tárrega.

But 1988 saw an important change of direction, when he played Joaquín Rodrigo’s Fantasía para un gentilhombre for the first time and, a year later, the composer’s celebrated Concierto de Aranjuez, two works which became central to his future artistic development. Invited to visit maestro Rodrigo at home in Madrid and receive his advice in person, on one occasion the young guitarist played the Fantasía para un gentilhombre to the composer; he was praised for his interpretation and subsequently honoured to be the soloist in the same work at a concert in the Teatro de Aranjuez, in 1988, which the composer attended.

Since then, Rolando Saad has played regular orchestral concerts, bringing his interpretation of Rodrigo’s masterpieces to audiences across the world; with well over 900 performances to date he has played the Concierto de Aranjuez in more concerts than any other soloist, frequently giving the first performance of the work at the venues he has visited. A distinguished career has taken the guitarist to major concert halls across Europe and America, including the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Vienna’s Musikverein, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, London Barbican Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie and Konzerthaus, the Gasteig in Munich, Zurich’s Tonhalle, the ICE Kraków, the PoznaÅ„'s Philharmonie, the Parco della Musica and Auditorium in Rome, the Teatro Real and Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and L’Auditori y Palau de la Música in Barcelona, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Geneva’s Victoria Hall, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the RAI auditorium in Turin, the Coliseo daLisboa, the Casa da Musica of Oporto, the Konserthus and Berwaldhallen in Stockholm, the Oslo's Konsethus, Copenhagen’s Tivoli Concert Hall, De Doelen in Rottedam, the Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Rudolfinum in Prague, Warsaw National Philharmonic, Philharmonic of Luxemourg, the Teatro dal Verme and the Auditorium in Milan and Giovanni Agnelli Auditorium in Turin, Monaco’s Rainier III Auditorium, the Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao, the Kursaal in San Sebastián, the Auditorio de Zaragoza, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico.

It must be underlined that Rolando Saad has performed more than 70 occasions in the three most important halls of Barcelona (Gran Teatre del Liceu, Palau de la Música and Auditori), in more than 30 times in the biggest Madrid’s halls (Teatro Real and Auditorio Nacional) and seven consecutive seasons in the Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the most important hall in the world. He’s the musician that has the record of performances in Spain, with over 1.000 performances.

Rolando Saad was born in Cordoba, Argentina, and studied the Tarrega guitar technique. He completed his studies in Barcelona with the famous Argentinean guitar soloist and composer Maria Luisa Anido, and won numerous awards early in his career, including the Chopin award from the city of Wroclaw in Poland (1985) and the City of Milan award in Italy in 1987. He has participated as special guest in tributes to prominent names of the Spanish guitar: Francisco Tarrega (Castellón, 1988), Andres Segovia (Linares and Leon, 1993), and, of course, Joaquin Rodrigo, to whom Rolando Saad paid tribute in various concerts (Aranjuez, 1988 -in the presence of the composer himself-, in 1989 three tribute tours to the 50th anniversary of the Concierto de Aranjuez, in 2000 and 2009 tribute to Rondrigo tour in Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Granada, San Sebastian , etc. and concerts in 2015 dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Concierto de Aranjuez). Few guitarists have had the chance to play so consistently with orchestras for over 20 years; Rolando Saad has appeared as a soloist with a range of celebrated conductors, including Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Fuat Mansurov, Alberto Lysy, Gennadi Provatorov, Eduard Serov, etc.

The long and passionate relationship between Saad and the Concierto de Aranjuez was Rolando’s salvation when he was seriously injured in a car accident in 1996: a strong desire to return to the concert platform to interpret Rodrigo’s masterpiece motivated the guitarist to overcome his injuries, and he was able to resume a successful career, performing in major European auditoriums and concert halls, which continues to this day. Rolando Saad’s interpretation of Rodrigo’s beautiful and dramatic Concierto de Aranjuez – undoubtedly the most popular guitar work ever written – is marked by exemplary technique and a very particular sound: as one of the few guitarists trained in the Francisco Tárrega style (using fingertips rather than nails to play), his outstanding technical expertise and dynamic phrasing means that he is able to play with an orchestra but without amplification.

In December 07 he recorded the Concierto de Aranjuez with the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. With this ensemble Rolando Saad made his debut in the Barbican Hall in London on February 2008.

In 2011 Rolando Saad successfully presented the version for guitar and orchestra of the El Amor Brujo and in 2014 The Great Spanish Gala "from Classic to Flamenco", the show that combines guitar, Spanish ballet and singing, including the great titles and composers that captured nature of the Spanish soul in the best way with the variety of styles: the Adagio of the Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo, fragments of Carmen by Bizet and El Amor Brujo by Falla.

In the 2015 - 2016 season Rolando Saad began a tour performing in numerous concerts halls of Europe, such as Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Palacio Euskalduna and Gran Teatre del Liceu, in order to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the immortal Concierto de Aranjuez and his 25th Anniversary of playing it musical piece in most prestigious concert halls.
